Prince Harry was prevented from delivering a traditional best man’s speech at Prince William’s 2011 wedding to Kate Middleton – though he was permitted to make brief remarks before the ceremony.
The Duke of Sussex served as William’s official best man and accompanied the future King to Westminster Abbey in a Bentley.
However, Harry has recently revealed he was compelled to participate in what he called a “bare-faced lie” and perform the ceremonial role to deflect attention from the ‘actual’ best men. It came before ‘disturbed’ William got angry with Meghan Markle over the missing Diana diamonds.
He stated that William’s longtime friends, James Meade and Thomas Van Straubenzee, delivered the customary speech at the reception.
Harry was instead relegated to serving as master of ceremonies, introducing the duo – and he nearly caused embarrassment for his new sister-in-law, reports the Mirror.
Following the conclusion of the Westminster Abbey ceremony, the newly married couple and their attendees proceeded to a private reception.
Harry delivered only brief remarks, but his words allegedly resonated strongly with guests, who alternated between laughter and tears. Beyond numerous jokes targeting his brother, he shared heartwarming anecdotes and expressed how their love served as an inspiration, which moved Kate to tears.
Harry had also prepared one particularly bold joke, but his then-girlfriend Chelsy Davy intervened and convinced him to remove it, believing it crossed a line.
According to Royal commentator Katie Nicholl, Harry intended to reference his new sister-in-law’s “killer legs” – a precarious choice for any bride, particularly the future Queen. In her book Harry: Life, Loss and Love, Katie revealed that Harry enlisted Chelsy to review his speech ahead of the ceremony.
She wrote: “She had helped Harry edit the best man’s speech, sensitively advising him to take out a line about Kate’s ‘killer legs’ that might have embarrassed the bride.”
It appears William returned the favor with his own remarks at his brother’s 2018 wedding to Meghan Markle.
This provided her the opportunity to witness Wills getting even when he delivered a best man’s speech at the Sussexes’ nuptials.
A guest informed the Sunday Times the second in line to the throne included a “filthy” joke about wet knickers in his best man address.
Regrettably, specifics of the joke haven’t emerged – but it might be material for the follow-up to Spare.
William also played a trick on his younger brother at the celebration, and nearly “floored” some attendees in the process.
Reportedly Harry recently tumbled off a ladder while attempting to replace a lightbulb, so Wills attached a ladder to the rear of the newlyweds’ vehicle.
Harry’s friend Charlie van Straubenzee also delivered remarks at the Frogmore House reception, teasing the prince about his red hair.
According to the Times, he challenged Harry’s conduct when he served as dorm monitor at Ludgrove School in Berkshire, where they were both pupils.
He said: “All I wanted was a cuddle from my mummy.
“Instead Harry swiped my teddy bear and tossed it onto the roof. Ladies and gentlemen, I ask you, how can you put someone in charge of a dorm when that someone is more unruly than the entire dorm combined?”.
In his memoir Spare, Harry discussed William’s wedding, alleging that his brother was slightly inebriated on rum just hours before his 2011 nuptials to Kate.
The Duke recounted how his elder brother went to greet the crowd camping out on the Mall by Buckingham Palace, ahead of the ceremony, while under the influence, having consumed alcohol to soothe his nerves.
Harry noted “you smell of alcohol” and offered him some mint candies as he rolled down the car windows, describing the scent of “the aftermath of last night’s rum” on his “tipsy” brother’s breath.
