The Prince and Princess of Wales are devoted and committed parents to their three young children: Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis.

Throughout the years, Prince William and Princess Kate have openly discussed their parenting guidelines and methods, with Supernanny Jo Frost even commending their “grounded” strategy for nurturing their children.

However, raising three young royals is certainly challenging. William and Kate have established a range of firm parenting principles to keep their children’s lives as ordinary as possible while also including them in occasional public events to prepare them for their Royal destinies.

Here are the guidelines that George, Charlotte, and Louis must follow in private, from remaining disconnected to participating in domestic duties.

Family dinners are a daily tradition

As William and Eugene strolled around Windsor Castle, the prince emphasized the importance of family dinners where they discuss their day. When Eugene asked, “Do you all sit down at the dinner table together?” William replied, “Yep absolutely, yep definitely. So, we sit and chat, it’s really important.”

Striving for normalcy

In conversation with Eugene Levy, William confessed that balancing work and family life is crucial. He and Kate aim to give their children as normal an upbringing as possible, despite their Royal status.

He stated, “For me, the most important thing in my life is family, and everything is about the future and about if you don’t start the children off now with a happy, healthy, stable home, I feel you’re setting them up for a bit of a hard time and a fall.”

Royal expert Katie Nicholl has previously remarked on the upbringing of George, Charlotte, and Louis, noting that behind closed doors, the Wales children are just like any other siblings.

She told the outlet: “They are far more ordinary than many might imagine – the kids even have to do chores in return for their pocket money. It’s about them wanting to have a normal, happy, ordinary family home and lifestyle which, at Adelaide Cottage, they are really achieving.”

School run schedules

William revealed that despite both his and Kate’s Royal obligations, they prefer to personally handle their children’s school transportation.

He explained: “I do try to stick to school timetables as best as possible. So, most days we’re in and out of school doing pick-ups and drop-offs.”

The Prince and Princess of Wales have consistently earned recognition for their commitment to the school run. Fellow Lambrook parents have expressed admiration for their reliability at the school gates despite their Royal responsibilities.

Open and honest communication

When discussing how the Princess of Wales’ cancer diagnosis impacted George, Charlotte and Louis, William revealed that his family maintains transparent conversations about challenging circumstances.

He explained: “We’re a very open family, so we talk about things that bother us, and things that trouble us, but you never quite know the knock-on effects that it can have. It’s just important to be there for each other and to kind of reassure the children that everything is okay.”

Prince William shared: “Everyone has their own coping mechanisms for these sorts of things, and children are constantly learning and adapting,” adding that the kids have coped “brilliantly well” following Kate’s health struggle.

Their nanny doesn’t live with them

Unlike many Royal families, William and Kate do not employ a live-in nanny to assist with their children, aiming to maintain a family-centric environment for their kids.

Royal commentator Katie Nicholl previously told The Mirror that the Wales children are expected to pitch in with household chores like any other kids. Another insider added, “I think it would surprise people to see how ordinary things are at home.

“The children help with laying the table, clearing their plates when they’ve finished eating and helping with tidying up. There’s no preferential treatment.”

While George, Charlotte, and Louis do have a full-time nanny, Maria Turrion Borrallo, she does not live at Adelaide Cottage.

No raised voices

Although William and Kate always encourage their children to express themselves openly and honestly, one key rule in the Wales household is that shouting is prohibited during difficult conversations.

“Shouting is absolutely ‘off limits’ for the children and any hint of shouting at each other is dealt with by removal,” a source revealed to The Sun in June 2020. William and Kate utilize these instances of ‘removal’ as chances to discuss emotions on a ‘chat sofa’.

The concept is that instead of the kids being alone with their thoughts and feelings, a parent is present to help them comprehend what has transpired and how to calmly express their emotions.

The no-shouting rule also extends to the couple when they are disciplining George, Charlotte, and Louis, as the insider informed the publication: “They are taken away from the scene of the row or disruption and talked to calmly by either Kate or William. Things are explained, and consequences outlined, and they never shout at them.”
