Prince William and Princess Catherine celebrate 15 years of marriage today (Wednesday, April 29) after tying the knot in Westminster Abbey in 2011. The tight-knit couple enjoyed a fairytale wedding, which was watched by millions around the world, and have since kept the details of their home life under wraps.
However, it has been revealed that their sleeping arrangements at Kensington Palace were slightly unusual. While most couples sleep in an upstairs bedroom, a floor plan of the historic building shows the Prince and Princess of Wales’ room was situated on the ground floor of Apartment 1A. The apartment, which was the home of Princess Margaret, has 20 rooms across four floors in total, as well as a lift, a gym and nine staff quarters.
On why the residence is referred to as an “apartment”, the late royal author Christopher Warwick said: “All of these royal residences at Kensington Palace are called apartments, which of course makes people immediately think they are flats like the American term for an apartment.
“They are not. If you think of Kensington Palace in a way, it is built around three courtyards. If you kind of think of them as being these wonderful red brick terrace houses. Because they are all joined, but separate houses.”
Prince William and Princess Catherine, who have three children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, relocated to the eight-bedroom Forest Hall in Windsor last year. They have recently endured a challenging period following the Princess’s cancer diagnosis alongside King Charles.
Before moving to Forest Hall, the couple lived at Adelaide Cottage. The historic Grade II-listed, four-bedroom home is located in the heart of the Crown Estate’s 655-acre private Windsor Home Park.
Queen Victoria is known for frequently enjoying breakfast or tea at Adelaide Cottage. She used it as a secluded retreat, and a private carriageway was even created for her to visit.
The property underwent a substantial revamp in 2015 and now features a more lavish interior. Some reports suggest that the master bedroom features a ceiling adorned with gilded dolphins and elaborate ropework.
