As well as talking about and seeing the important work the soldiers do, William and the troops also found themselves exchanging jokes. One of these jokes was about facial hair.
William, 43, was told by Jack Austin, 26, that many soldiers had started having just a moustache when 1 Mercian was serving in Estonia last year.
The prince then joked that he might shave off his beard and join the troops in having just a moustache. He said: “I might end up taking mine off and leaving a tash.”
This prompted a laugh, however the matter may not be considered as funny at home. This is because William revealed a few years ago that even growing a beard was a big change, one which left his daughter Princess Charlotte in tears.
When asked whether his family liked him having facial hair, William revealed in an interview with UK print media in South Africa in 2024: “Well Charlotte didn’t like it the first time.
“I got floods of tears, so I had to shave it off.”
He continued: “And then I grew it back. I thought, hang on a second and I convinced her it was going to be okay.”
He didn’t reveal at the time what his wife Princess Catherine thought of the facial hair, or whether his sons Prince George and Prince Louis liked it.
William has been sporting facial hair for a few years now, with many liking the look on him.
Princess Catherine said last year that she is not sure how long William will keep his beard, telling soldiers at the Irish Guards’ St Patrick’s Day celebrations: “These trends come and go. I was saying to my husband, I’m not sure how long he’s going to keep his for.”
