Prince William made a rare radio appearance live from the Isles of Scilly
Prince William has said that the Royal Family ‘couldn’t cope’ without his wife Kate Middleton during her cancer treatment.
On January 16, 2024, the Princess of Wales was admitted to the London Clinic for major abdominal surgery. After the operation, she spent nearly two weeks in hospital and was recuperating at home when she received the diagnosis of cancer and began chemotherapy.
Kate is currently in remission from cancer and slowly began gradually returning to work, appearing at events such as the Royal Variety Performance with her husband Prince William last year.

On Friday morning (May 22), His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales appeared on Heart Breakfast with Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden for a special live Heart broadcast to turn up the feel good from the Isles of Scilly, Cornwall. In a week where he watched his beloved Aston Villa win the Europa League, Prince William was tasked with picking the music played on the show.
One of the songs he picked was Where Is My Husband by singer Raye, joking that he chose it as Kate is ‘constantly asking’ the same question due to his busy schedule. Prince William then revealed that Kate has been a big help as they continue expanding healthcare on the Isles of Scilly.
“So proud, I’m very very proud. She’s amazing, she’s been through so much in the last couple of years particularly, and she’s been looking forward to the Italian trip a lot, so I’m really glad it went really well.
“She wanted to do a lot of research, god knows how much time now looking through all the paper work. She’s a proper pro on early years, and most evenings I’m fighting to get past in the bedroom all the paperwork she’s got lined up to read. So I’m so pleased it went so well for her, and I think she came back buzzing,” he said.
Jamie replied: “It must have been a very difficult time back then with the kids, and seeing her being able to fulfil those duties must have made you feel very happy
To which Prince William noted: “Very much so, she’s an amazing mum and an amazing wife, and literally our family couldn’t cope without her so she’s been absolutely stunning.”
According to Prince William, Kate is ‘kind of edging herself back into doing more and more’ of their trips. He stated that the trips ‘take a lot out of you because you’re on permanent receiving end the whole time’, but they are making sure to ‘balance that and make sure she’s rested’.
Explaining why the Isles of Scilly are very special to him, Prince William said: “So, I used to come here a lot when I was younger. My parents brought me down here and it is, as you can see, a place like no other. It’s kind of a different world down here, it’s beautiful.”
He continued: “It’s great. The children can go where they want here. It’s safe, they can go out and explore. The beaches are amazing; you can see the water is crystal clear. I mean, there is so much to do down here as a family. It’s fantastic!”
Working with the NHS through the Duchy of Cornwall to make sure that the local people get the healthcare they deserve in the area, Prince William highlighted the importance of expanding the hospitals, as well as having maternity services and more social care.
“Really looking forward to seeing them and all the wonderful NHS staff who are doing a hell of a job, with all the conditions they have to manage down here, and then I’m going to see some housing we’ve opened for essential workers, it hasn’t been built for nearly 30 years now, the scale we’re doing to support the teachers, the firefighters, the nurses, anyone who is an essential role and social care for elderly residents…
“It’s a new wing of a hospital, it hasn’t been upgraded or expanded for quite a few years, and the NHS find it quite difficult to expand down here so we’ve done everything we can to allow that to happen, because like I said, the maternity services particularly, when any lady was pregnant or going into labour, they had to go across to the mainland, and the cost of that, flying particularly as well as the accommodation and the family being brought over was huge,” he said.
Listen and watch back the special broadcast on Heart Breakfast with Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden on Friday 22nd May 6:30am – 10am on Global Player and YouTube and across the UK.
