Prince William is taking the lead in the wake of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s arrest — at least, that is what royal experts believe.
It’s been a well-known secret that the Prince of Wales wanted to take a much firmer stance on his scandal-ridden uncle than his father, King Charles. Now, it looks like that boundary is being drawn with his cousins, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.

On his March 13 podcast, The Lownie Report, royal author Andrew Lownie gave his assessment of William’s power in this troubling situation. He believes that the king’s eldest son is “calling more of the shots now.”

“So there’s definitely a change going on, and I get the sense also that there’s a bit of distancing even from the Sussexes, clearly from the Waleses… I think the decision to ban them from Ascot is interesting,” he explained. “The line that [Beatrice and Eugenie] are pushing is that they were never going to go to Ascot in the first place, and it does seem odd to be so public about this distancing.”
Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie are reportedly banned from Royal Ascot in June, per the Daily Mail.
“I’ve spoken to my friend who works at Ascot, and they said the girls have been told they can’t be there this year,” a palace insider claimed to the media outlet. “Beatrice has taken it the hardest. She’s been completely blindsided by all of this.”
People is also reporting that the daughters of Andrew and Sarah Ferguson “have made alternative plans for this Easter holiday.” That decision makes it feel like their position in the royal family is on thin ice right now, especially when it comes to their titles.
“I don’t think either of them has ever flaunted their titles, but there’s obviously a huge cachet in some circles about being called a Princess. A title like that opens doors and sets up connections, which both Beatrice and Eugenie have used to their advantage,” royal expert Jennie Bond told The Mirror.
Now that their royal lineage has been disrupted with Andrew’s issues, Bond thinks “they might like to quietly drop the use of theirs.”
If Prince William has his way, that just might happen.
