Princess Anne and Sir Timothy Laurence delight fans with warm waves at Winter Olympics

Princess Anne and her husband, Sir Timothy Laurence, made a
striking appearance at the 2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremony in
Milan, waving enthusiastically to Team GB and the crowd from their
box at the San Siro stadium.

Wrapped in matching scarves and warm coats, the royal couple
were clearly in high spirits as they enjoyed the star-studded
proceedings, which included performances from Mariah Carey singing
Volare, Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli, and Chinese pianist
Lang Lang. Before the ceremony, Anne was guest of honour at a
reception celebrating UK excellence at the British Consulate
General, mingling with A-list attendees including fashion designer
Donatella Versace.

The Princess Royal has a long history with the Olympic Games.
She became the first member of the British royal family to compete
for Team GB at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, riding her mother Queen
Elizabeth II’s horse, Goodwill, in the three-day equestrian event.
She later joined the International Olympic Committee in 1988 and
has maintained a strong role in promoting British sport, alongside
her daughter, Zara Tindall, an Olympic silver medallist in
2012.

Ahead of the Milan games, the Princess shared a video message of
support for Team GB, praising their dedication and
achievements.

She said: “To get this far is a remarkable achievement. It
represents not only your talents on the field of play but also the
countless hours of practice requiring dedication and determination
that have got you to this point.

“As your competitions begin, know that you will have the support
of the nation. On behalf of us all, I wish you the very best of
luck.”

At the venue, athletes and staff were delighted by the royal
presence. Curling silver medallist Bruce Mouat described meeting
the Princess Royal and Sir Timothy as “star-studded but very down
to earth,” while his mixed-doubles partner, Jen Dodds, recalled
feeling “overwhelmed” by the excitement and the personal
encouragement from Anne.

The opening ceremony set the tone for the 2026 Winter Olympics,
spread across Milan and Cortina, with Princess Anne’s continued
involvement highlighting her enduring commitment to British sport,
Olympic excellence, and the support of Team GB.
