Princess Charlotte made a telling move at just four-years-old when she refused to give up a present from a member of the public. Charlotte was handed a bunch of white roses while greeting crowds outside the Sandringham estate alongside her mother Princess Kate on Christmas Day in 2019. Under the usual protocol, palace aides take bouquets from members of the royal family to enable their continued interaction with well-wishers.
But the little princess was caught on camera holding tightly onto the gift and firmly shaking her head when an aide offered to carry it for her. The interaction offered an early insight into Charlotte’s personality, which commentators have described as the most outgoing of her siblings.
Speaking several years ago, royal expert Katie Nicholl told The Mirror: “Charlotte is the most buoyant and outgoing of the three children. It’s that strength of character that will stand her in good stead when she’s older.”
Childrenswear designer Amaia Arrieta, who has dressed the 11-year-old since babyhood, also described her as a “caring and determined little girl” last year.
She told People Magazine: “She is sweet but also has her own opinions … She looks very confident and at ease with herself and the environment she’s in.”
A palace insider added that the princess is also already a “natural” at handling public appearances. “She has taken to royal events like a duck to water,” they said.
Charlotte celebrated her 11th birthday on May 2, with the Prince and Princess of Wales sharing a previously unseen photo of her smiling and walking in a field of daisies to mark the occasion.
William and Kate also posted a short video on social media showing a series of clips of their daughter during a family holiday in Cornwall over Easter.
The princess could be seen petting the family’s dogs Orla and Otto, smiling on a boat, making a heart with stones in the sand and running before throwing a ball on the beach.
The footage was accompanied by the message: “Thank you for the lovely birthday messages for Princess Charlotte, 11 today!”
