The Princess of Wales is marking her 43rd birthday today, likely to be spent with her husband, Prince William, and their three children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
The Prince and Princess of Wales usually keep their home life private. However, their living arrangements at Kensington Palace are somewhat unconventional.
This is because they don’t sleep in an upstairs bedroom like most couples – a blueprint of their residence in Apartment 1A of the iconic London building reveals the bedrooms’ location.
Surprisingly, the main bedroom they previously used was located on the ground floor of Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace, as reported by Cambridgeshire Live. This was once the residence of Princess Margaret and features 20 rooms, four floors, its own lift, gym, and nine staff quarters.
The late Royal author Christopher Warwick clarified why it’s termed an ‘apartment’ during a guest appearance on True Royalty’s Royal Beat. He explained: “All of these royal residences at Kensington Palace are called apartments, which of course makes people immediately think they are flats like the American term for an apartment.”, reports the Mirror.
“They are not. If you think of Kensington Palace in a way, it is built around three courtyards. If you kind of think of them as being these wonderful red brick terrace houses. Because they are all joined, but separate houses.”
The couple, who have weathered a challenging few years with the Princess’s cancer diagnosis and her father-in-law King Charles’ health issues, have access to Anmer Hall in Norfolk. However, they relocated to the eight-bedroom Forest Hall in Windsor last year, having previously resided at Adelaide Cottage, another modest abode in Windsor.
Nestled within the Crown Estate’s private 655-acre Royal park, this historic residence was built in 1831 as a retreat for Queen Adelaide, wife of King William IV, and is steeped in rich and scandalous history.
Adelaide Cottage was a preferred dwelling of Queen Victoria, who often enjoyed her breakfast there. Another notable former occupant was Group Captain Peter Townsend, the romantic interest of Princess Margaret.
Townsend, an ex-RAF pilot and equerry to King George VI, had a notorious love affair with Princess Margaret. Their relationship caused quite a stir, given that Peter was a divorcee who was 16 years older than her.
In 2015, Adelaide Cottage underwent significant refurbishments and now boasts some truly lavish decor. It’s reported that the master bedroom features a ceiling embellished with gilded dolphins and rope decoration.
Following Prince Harry and Meghan’s nuptials in 2018, there were fleeting rumours that the cottage would become their new Windsor home. It was suggested that the couple valued the privacy of the cottage and its closeness to London.
