As well as paying homage to the late monarch, Catherine mingled with over 200 guests at the event, including representatives from the Queen’s patronages such as Cancer Research UK and the British Red Cross. Fellow centenarians who are celebrating their 100th year also attended the reception in the Marble Hall. While guests reflected on the Queen’s legacy, Catherine made a candid admission to a group of women.
As reported by the Mirror, the princess revealed she is often asked to speak louder at engagements. She explained: “I find these environments are really hard. I’ve also got a very soft voice, so I always get told ‘Speak up a bit louder!’”
The Princess of Wales previously confessed that she has a tendency to “spend far too long chatting” at royal engagements. In Our Queen at Ninety, an ITV documentary released in 2016, she explained: “There’s a real art to walkabouts, everybody teases me in the family that I spend far too long chatting. I still have to learn a little bit more, and to pick up a few more tips, I suppose.”
Although she admitted to finding busy engagements difficult, body language expert Judi James said Catherine effortlessly embraced the occasion on Tuesday. She praised the future queen’s body language as “perfect”.
Judi said: “Kate’s body language here defines her as the perfect and very active hostess, while the simple lilac dress with its 1940s inspired bust darts and the three rows of pearls look like a very powerful homage to the iconic styling of the late Queen herself on what would have been her 100th birthday.”
Catherine is known for being generous with her time which was epitomised by her behaviour at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday. She was seen spending ample time with some of the UK’s oldest citizens, smiling and listening to their stories.
Judi added: “Kate registers a similar level of warmth with an older gentleman guest, whose hand she appears to keep hold of after their shake as she also places her free hand onto his arm and cocks her head in an upgrade ritual of added interest and affection.”
According to the body language expert, Catherine adopted her loving nature from the late Queen herself. She has an ability to make guests feel comfortable and relaxed during royal events.
Judi continued: “It’s not just the touch rituals that make Kate such a good networker and host here though. When she is speaking and laughing with another group she raises both her hands in mid air in a truncated ritual to suggest she is almost helpless with laughter while her tell of authentic humour and fun comes from another upgrade ritual, which is the nose-wrinkle as she laughs, to suggest she really is enjoying the company and to encourage them to relax and laugh together.”
