In recent years, the practicalities of royal family members taking a step back to handle their health considerations has become increasingly common. Last year, both King Charles and Kate Middleton took time away from their official duties as they both underwent treatment for cancer. Recently, the Norwegian royal palace announced that Crown Princess Mette-Marit, the wife of Crown Prince Haakon, will be taking her own step back as she undergoes treatment to help with pulmonary fibrosis.
“Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mette-Marit will undergo a month of pulmonary rehabilitation in Norway from the beginning of October,” they shared in a statement over the weekend. “The Crown Princess will therefore not carry out official assignments in October, but some exceptions are planned, such as the dinner for the representatives of the Storting at the Royal Palace on October 23. The Crown Princess is scheduled to resume her official work in November.”
Per the Mayo Clinic, pulmonary fibrosis is a lung disease that causes scarring and damage to the lung tissues, ultimately making it more difficult for the organs to function properly. Mette-Marit was first diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2018, and has in the subsequent years been forced to take periods of leave due to the illness.
Earlier this year, the palace confirmed that this is likely to continue to be the status quo, saying in a statement in March, “The Crown Princess has daily symptoms and ailments that affect her ability to perform her duties. The Crown Princess needs more rest, and her daily routine changes more quickly than before. This means that changes to her official schedule may occur more frequently, and at shorter notice than we are used to.”
The news of Mette-Marit’s treatment comes after a challenging few weeks for her family. In August, it was announced that 32 charges had been filed against her son, Marius Borg Høiby, including rape, abuse in close relationships, acts of violence, making death threats, and assaulting a public official. Høiby, who could face up to 10 years in jail, has denied most of the charges, according to his lawyer Petar Sekulic.
