Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie have been issued a blunt five-word warning over the future of their status with the Royal Family. While there is no suggestion of wrongdoing on the part of the two sisters, they have been told that “goodwill has a shelf life” in their positions within the Firm.
With calls to strip Beatrice and Eugenie of their official titles, bestselling royal author Robert Jobson said that this is a decision that would need to be made by King Charles and Prince William. The calls come after both Andrew and Sarah were stripped of their York titles last year.
Speaking exclusively to the Daily Express, Mr Jobson explained: “George V stripped his German relatives of their titles without blinking, changed the family name, drew a line. It worked. Charles and William need that same nerve. Beatrice and Eugenie are not their father. Everyone knows that. But goodwill has a shelf life.”
King George V’s stringent move saw him issue the Letters Patent 1917. It dictated a number of important royal rules, many of which still exist, or were slightly adapted by Queen Elizabeth II when her great-grandchildren began to arrive, that only the monarch’s children, male-line grandchildren and the eldest son of the Prince of Wales could hold a princely title.
It read: “…the grandchildren of the sons of any such sovereign in the direct male line (save only the eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales) shall have and enjoy in all occasions the style and title enjoyed by the children of dukes of these our realms.”
Beatrice currently remains ninth in the line of succession, with Eugenie at twelfth place following her sister’s two daughters.
According to Mr Jobson, King Charles is very fond of his nieces and is the only fighting in their corner. While stating that “nobody gives up a title voluntarily – without royal duties, an HRH is a target, not a shield”, he added: “It ties them to Andrew. To Epstein. To all of it. Charles loves those girls. Always has. But he won’t go to war for Andrew – and they know it.
“William is cold-eyed about the institution. Unsentimental. Catherine backs people who stay quiet and get on with things. Of the three, Charles is the only one who actually cares.”
The names of Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie appear in the US Department of Justice’s release of the Epstein files. However, being named in the documents does not necessarily indicate wrongdoing.
