Priscilla Presley, 80, is reflecting on her life with her late ex-husband,Elvis Presley, while promoting her new memoir, Softly, As I Leave You: Life After Elvis.
People magazine reported that Priscilla briefly spoke about Elvis’s double life during their marriage in a September 22 interview on The TODAY Show. According to Priscilla, she was aware that female fans were meeting with her husband, whom she wed at the age of 21 in 1967.
“Our life was very different, you know? Very, very different. And when he was in Vegas, you know, he was really starting his career back again into Vegas. We had a home in Palm Springs, a second home and I would go there to check it out when he was in Vegas to see how it’s doing. If it’s clean, if the maids had cleaned everything before he comes home,” recalled Priscilla during the TODAY interview.
She said she once decided to retrieve the mail from the property’s mailbox. However, she was upset to find that Elvis was receiving letters from “all girls.”
“I’m reading the mail, and the things that I was reading I really disapproved of and didn’t like. They would go and meet Elvis at the house on weekends when he went, and it was another life. Now, he would come home great and wonderful. He was still a good husband but it was just too many of us,” said Priscilla while filming the TODAY interview with a laugh.
Priscilla Presley Opened up About Her Marriage to Elvis in a 2022 Interview
People magazine reported that Priscilla, who was first introduced to Elvis when she was 14, divorced the “Can’t Help Falling in Love” singer, who was accused of infidelity, in 1973. According to the publication, Priscilla and Elvis’s karate instructor, Mike Stone, had a romantic relationship during her marriage to The King.
People magazine reported that Priscilla shared one child, Lisa Marie Presley, who died in 2023 when she was 54, with Elvis. In addition, Priscilla and her ex-partner, Garibaldi Garcia, are parents to a 38-year-old son, Navarone Garibaldi.
In the September 22 TODAY interview, Priscilla said she and Elvis had a positive relationship following their split. According to Priscilla, she still views Elvis, who died in 1977, as “the love of [her] life.”
In a 2022 interview on the Jonathan Ross Show, Priscilla explained she has had some mixed feelings about being forever associated with her ex-husband.
“At first it was very difficult because to always be associated with someone, you start losing yourself and who you are. People always wanted to know, and still do, actually, want to know about him,” said Priscilla during the interview.
She clarified that she “understand[s] it a lot better now than [she] did when [she] was younger.” Priscilla suggested she originally took issue with the situation because she didn’t have a sense of identity without him.
“I was kind of lost really in who I was, really, early in my life. I really didn’t have teenage years. I learned so much about him and was with him so much that I thought the way he did,” said Priscilla in the interview. “I knew what he liked, what he didn’t like. I knew his thoughts. I knew everything, as far as everything you could possibly do when you live together at such a young age. So I think that’s why people ask me so many questions. And I’m much more comfortable with it now because I am my own person on my own right now. So I’m able to share that.”
