Queen Camilla was gifted a Tiffany and Co. brooch by Melania Trump, yet she had not been seen wearing the piece since leaving the White House.
Camilla, 78, was spotted wearing the brooch while accompanying her husband, King Charles, during a state visit to the U.S. last week. The royal couple received a warm reception at the White House from the First Lady and President Donald Trump.
As Charles and Camilla said their farewells to the Trumps, Camilla showcased the vintage brooch, which featured a diamond floral design encircled by rubies. While Camilla wore the $40,700 (£30,000) brooch upon her departure from the Trumps, she ditched it for a Cartier piece for her visit to Arlington National Cemetery. The accessory displayed both the Union Jack and the American flag. This comes after Trump was criticised for a ‘disrespectful’ gesture towards Queen Camilla.
It was the very same piece Camilla had worn upon touching down at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. This follows Melania’s breach of royal protocol when observers noticed an improper detail in her attire.
The brooch was originally presented to the late Queen Elizabeth II in 1957 by Robert F. Wagner Jr., the former Mayor of New York, and has since been passed down to Camilla.
It is customary for royals to exchange gifts during state visits. The Tiffany and Co. brooch was bestowed upon Camilla by Melania during her and the President’s state visit to the UK last September. In exchange, Camilla presented Melania with a handbag by Anya Hindmarch and a silver and enamel bowl created by artist Cara Murphy. During Charles and Camilla’s state visit last week, the Royal couple gave the Trumps a significant gift, with Charles handing the President the bell from a World War II-era British submarine named HMS Trump.
Charles unveiled the gift at a state dinner hosted at the White House, stating: “May it stand as a testimony to our nations’ shared history and shining future.”
Charles described the bell as his “personal gift.” The artefact carried the President’s name and the year 1944, commemorating when the submarine left a UK shipyard.
The King explained that the bell came from a submarine that had “a critical role during the war in the Pacific.”
During a special toast at the White House state dinner, Charles reflected on the history between Britain and America as “reconciliation, from adversaries to the closest of allies, not always perhaps following the straightest path.”
Referencing the gift, he joked: “And should you ever need to get hold of us, well, just give us a ring.”
Charles continued: “Our people have fought and fallen together in defense of the values we cherish across the ocean and from coast to coast. We have stood together through the best and worst of times,” while acknowledging the “challenges we now face from those who wish us harm across the world.” This latest incident follows Trump being filmed carrying out a startling act towards Melania at a highly inappropriate moment.
