Queen Elizabeth II took the throne when she was 25-years-old and as she aged she remained respected and relative, but it’s not to say it’s the same for all royals.
Queen Elizabeth II was the head of state, which may have played a role in public perception, but so is King Charles, and his sons are deemed more popular than him in terms of polls and coverage.
Daily Express US spoke exclusively to Pauline Maclaran about why this is with the royal author sharing her thoughts on the matter.
Maclaran, co-author of Royal Fever and Professor of Marketing and Consumer Research at Royal Holloway said: “The late Queen was regarded as everyone’s favorite granny. She was not seen as a glamorous figure or even required to be one because of this.”
She added: “Her longevity insured her public’s admiration and she represented stability and tradition. Other royals cannot really fill her place in this way.”
If Prince William and Princess Kate are more popular than Charles and Camilla, it suggests the Wales children may one day outshine their parents, which we asked Maclaran about.
The Royal Holloway professor said: “In turn, their children are likely to be the glamorous figures amongst their generation in 20 years time!”
She added: “We have to remember that even Charles was regarded as quite a glamorous playboy in his time.”
In terms of agism, the Royal Family are not immune to it, but they may not feel the affects as strongly as the rest of us regular folks.
“I think they just continue their jobs regardless – they can’t really be pushed out of their jobs even if interest in them becomes very fickle.”
“And, of course, their status, wealth and influence buffer them from any of the more harmful effects of ageism that many of their public experience.”
