Queen Maxima of the Netherlands has been forced to pull out of several engagements this week due to an illness, it has emerged. The Government Information Service (RVD) said the Dutch Queen is suffering from the flu and has thus cancelled has appearances on Thursday, today and this weekend.
Maxima was in New York on Tuesday and Wednesday, where she attended events in her role as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Financial Health, but her health deteriorated on Thursday. Her visit to Rotterdam on Thursday was cancelled, as was her visit to Purmerend.
According to the Dutch outlet AD, Maxima was scheduled to visit four locations today in Purmerend: a youth centre, a swimming pool, a garage and a residential complex.
Today’s visit has been rescheduled; however, no new date has been announced.
The Dutch Queen was also expected to make visits this weekend, which has also been postponed.
Local media claim Maxima’s next engagement is scheduled for Monday, when she is expected to head to Rotterdam to discuss initiatives supported by the Orange Fund, of which she is patron.
It comes just days after King Willem-Alexander’s wife was seen tearing up as she watched her daughter and heiress to the Dutch throne, Princess Catharina-Amalia, take part in a special ceremony after completing her military training.
Maxima attended a ceremony at the Dutch Ministry of Defence in Ermelo last Friday. While there, she mingled with the other parents, wearing a cool grey coat, paired with a big scarf and black leather gloves.
She was pictured hugging her daughter, who wore her uniform proudly.
