The tour, which began on Tuesday, has already seen the couple get involved in important projects. One of the engagements so far has seen Meghan help to serve lunch at McAuley Community Services for Women.
The centre helps women and families’ who are experiencing homelessness or violence in Melbourne.
This is because the duchess was wearing a very expensive outfit during the volunteering stint, including a $1,250 navy dress from Sydney designer Karen Gee with Dior’s $1,000 ‘Dioressence’ pointed-toe pumps.
Prince Harry’s wife also wore yellow gold Puffy Heart earrings by Australian Real Fine Studio costing $1,118 and a Tiffany gold bracelet, along with the gold Cartier Tank Française watch she always wears.
It is believed Meghan wore this impressive outfit not to be tasteless, but because her fashion wardrobe from the trip is being put online for her fans to see on the AI-powered fashion discovery platform OneOff.
The platform, which Meghan has joined this week as a user and an investor, allows people to see and purchase clothing worn by celebrities, influencers, and creators. Meghan has her own page on the platform which will show fans the brand, price and where to buy her outfits.
However, while this may have been the real reason why she wore such a glam outfit to volunteer, it has sparked some backlash online, as reported by The Daily Mail.
Entertainment commentator Peter Ford posted on X: “Wow I wonder if the women at the homeless shelter knew they were part of her new project? Explains why she was so overdressed for the setting.”
Another person wrote: “Tone deaf.”
Someone else commented: “No self-awareness. Shameful.”
While some people felt this way, plenty of Meghan’s fans have rushed to her defence. One person wrote on X: “You are allowed to have nice things and still give back to humanity…”
Another said: “She doesn’t mind getting hands on, helping, regardless, is it a crime to wear a watch? How many people wear good watches these days..”
