Rebel Wilson is currently filming a new movie, Girl Group, which she wrote, will direct and star in
The movie marks Wilson’s second film as a director — but her first movie, The Deb, still hasn’t been released due to a series of lawsuits between Wilson and its producers that have been filed since July 2024
“Directing with this great team is easy,” Wilson wrote on Instagram as she shared a photo from the set of Girl Group
Whether or not Rebel Wilson‘s first movie as a director will be released remains up in the air. But despite that, she’s already moving on to her second film.
On Wednesday, Sept. 24, Deadline reported that Wilson, 45, will write, direct, produce and star in a new comedy titled Girl Group, which she has already started filming in the United Kingdom with stars, like Randall Park and Sheridan Smith. According to the outlet, Girl Group follows Wilson as a pop star who is kicked off her group’s reunion tour and sentenced to community service by a court.
“She seizes the chance to stage a comeback by coaching a group of misfit teen girls for a major record label audition, only to push them too far, forcing her to confront her toxic industry — and her own streak of self-destruction,” the movie’s synopsis reads, according to Deadline.
Wilson acknowledged in an Instagram post shared on Sept. 7 that she was beginning to direct her second movie. The first film she helmed, The Deb, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2024 but has not been released due to a series of lawsuits between her and the movie’s producers, Amanda Ghost, Gregor Cameron and Vince Holden, as well as actress Charlotte MacInnes.
“As I start directing my 2nd film today, I have to take a moment to remember technically the 1st film I directed @thedebfilm which sadly has only been seen by audiences at Toronto International Film Festival,” Wilson wrote alongside new images from The Deb. “At least we had that and I’m proud for fighting for it to happen! Buuut in these troubled times, we all need uplifting funny empowering movies, so I hope the powers that be let this movie come out! Rebs xoxo.”
On Sept. 18, Wilson shared a new photo of herself posing with a number of actors and extras on what appeared to be the Girl Group set. “So excited about this one! GIRL GROUP 🎩 🎶 🤍🖤🤍,” she wrote. “Directing with this great team is easy!”
The actress and filmmaker has also shared multiple photos of herself seemingly in character as a pop singer, complete with long blonde hair, on the set of the production in recent days.
Deadline first reported on Wilson’s Girl Group back in 2019. At that time, the outlet reported the movie would follow a Korean-American high school student and her friends who receive help from a former British girl group member when they enter a competition to be an opening act for a major K-pop band.
The Deb, meanwhile, has been tied up in legal action dating back to July 2024, when producers Ghost, Cameron and Holden originally filed a lawsuit against Wilson that alleged she sought to receive “credit for work she did not do” on the film’s original music.
Wilson responded to the suit on Instagram at the time, writing, “It’s not defamation if it’s the TRUTH (those ‘producers’ who I mentioned in my last post have just filed a defamation suit against me and sent to the press)! Let our cool movie play at Toronto and stop messing about with a rubbish defamation suit against me!”

Wilson has since claimed, the producers attempted to prevent the movie from making its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024. The movie ultimately did premiere, but Wilson’s attorneys filed a countersuit against the trio of producers in October 2024, alleging that they deliberately misappropriated $900,000 AUD from the movie’s budget, coerced Wilson’s signature on agreements related to the movie under duress, and that Ghost sexually harassed The Deb’s lead actress, MacInnes, allegedly causing the person “to suffer a breakdown.”
In July, multiple outlets reported that the producers’ company, AI Film, filed another lawsuit against Wilson in Australia, alleging that the Pitch Perfect star deliberately sabotaged the movie’s release and that she has caused the company “financial and reputational damage.”
In response, Wilson posted the opening number to the movie musical on Instagram and a lengthy message on her Instagram Stories stating the new lawsuit “makes no sense.” She also claimed that the suit was “continued bullying and harassment.”
In August, lawyers for MacInnes served Wilson with a legal complaint in Australia and said in a statement that MacInnes “has strenuously and repeatedly denied that she was a victim of sexual assault,” despite Wilson’s claims in her own lawsuit against The Deb’s producers.
