Reconstructing the world of Bob Lazar: ‘S4’ collaboration brings original story to life

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The basic story is one well known to our viewers since we’ve reported on Bob Lazar many times over the decades. One thing we know for sure — the mere mention of his name still ignites arguments, character attacks, and metaphorical heads exploding.

Visually stunning, the documentary film titled “S4” brings the tale to a new level, thanks to virtual reality technology that didn’t exist back in the beginning.

“DENNIS”: There are nine flying saucers, flying discs … .

A live interview with a shadowy guy in May 1989 launched an avalanche that is still rolling. Months later, when the public learned the name Bob Lazar, the story took on a life of its own, launching bus tours, TV shows, movies, an E.T. Highway, a baseball team, songs, trinkets, jokes, and an army of people devoted to debunking Lazar over the decades.

Lazar claimed he worked at S4, a series of hangars built into a hillside near Papoose Dry Lake and designed to blend in with the desert terrain. Now, there’s a striking new likeness.

LUIGI VENDITTELLI: It’s surreal. More than anything. I think that if I had to put it in one word, it’s that. It doesn’t … it’s surreal.

Luigi Vendittelli is a Canadian marketer, not a filmmaker. During the COVID shutdown, he took a deep dive into the Bob Lazar story and had an idea to create a realistic, die-cast model of the flying saucer Lazar said he worked on, dubbed “the sport model.”

Toward the end of his six-month stint working at S4, Lazar took friends out to see test flights of the craft and videotaped them — twice.

Vendittelli managed to contact Lazar, and it started a four-and-a-half-year endeavor.

VENDITTELLI: It’s like a car company making a car. Well, we had a, a book to how to make a sport model. Okay. And it was about all the specifics.

They decided to make a virtual version first and consulted some of the best 3D designers in the world, which led to an idea to recreate the inside of the hangar where Lazar said he worked … which led to a larger idea of recreating the entire S4 facility as a virtual reality environment that anyone could visit.

VENDITTELLI: One of the guys I was working with said, you could do a VR experience doing this. And I said, okay, well, now, now we’re talking, you know. At least there’s a way to monetize it because it’s a lot of money to invest.

This began many months of back-and-forth exchanges, trying to extract and duplicate Lazar’s memories based on his earlier drawings and decades-old graphics.

VENDITTELLI: I said, this is an incredible opportunity to not just create something that’s somewhat of an entertainment piece. But what if we can create a historical visual document? What if we can create something that is accurate to whatever a person remembers?

It was a painstaking process, and at each step, it rekindled Lazar’s memories. The color of paint in a hallway or the location of a door or workbench. And when it was finished?

BOB LAZAR: It really made the hair stand up on my arms. That, that, that he reached that level of reality to me.

Lazar did not want to be part of another documentary, and didn’t welcome the idea of doing interviews to promote it. Every time he has raised his head out of the foxhole over nearly four decades, he gets pummeled as a liar, conman, criminal or worse, who covets attention.

LAZAR: But, Yeah. Attention. You, if you make a claim like that, you clearly have, you know nothing about me.

Of the four and a half year incubation period, Lazar’s instinctive resistance subsided, primarily because it was fun to collaborate and because the end product was so close to what he says really happened back then.

LAZAR: I had no intention of doing a documentary to begin with. But, once I started, I started seeing the graphics, that were and remained to be really cutting edge. No. Wow. That would be great. Because no matter how many times you tell a story, you can tell a story to 100 people, even a detailed explanation of what you’re trying to get across, and you will still come out with 40 or 50 different, you know, images in their mind or versions of it.

“S4,” the film, is already a hit, in part because podcaster Joe Rogan helped launch it to his worldwide audience.

Detractors are also having a moment, dredging up the same stuff they’ve unleashed before.

Although the film is available on multiple platforms, Luigi created his own site where people can access bonus material not included in the film itself. Find the film at either of these websites:
