By the top of the third inning of Tuesday night’s game between the Royals and Yankees at Kauffman Stadium, New York already had 12 hits.
Bailey Falter started for the Royals in a bullpen game, and he ran into trouble early.
Falter struggled, but he also wasn’t helped by a replay review that helped the Yankees put up a crooked number in the first inning.
After getting the first two outs of the frame, Falter gave up a solo home run to Yankees left fielder Cody Bellinger. First baseman Paul Goldschmidt followed with a double, but the inning appeared to be over when designated hitter Ben Rice lined out to Royals right fielder Jac Caglianone.
The ball had an exit velocity of 107.4 mph, meaning it was crushed. Caglianone initially seemed to hesitate before he came in but made a snowcone catch with the ball peeking out of the top of his glove.
New York manager Bret Boone challenged the catch and the replay showed Caglianone trapped the ball, but it was really close. Take a look and make the call yourself.
Rice was awarded an RBI single as Goldschmidt scored. Falter, who had taken some warmup throws as the review took more than a minute.
When play resumed, Yankees third baseman then followed with a 420-foot two-run homer that made it 4-0 instead of 1-0 in favor of the Yankees after the first inning.
