The state of Kansas is no longer interested in luring the Kansas City Royals away from Missouri, a Topeka television station is reporting.
Kansas House Speaker Dan Hawkins “confirmed with us that Kansas officials will no longer be pursuing the Royals,” reports KSNT.
Although Kansas in 2024 offered both the Royals and Kansas City Chiefs new stadium financing through the state’s Sales Tax and Revenue STAR bonds program, the Chiefs have tentatively agreed to the offer while the Royals let the Dec. 31 deadline pass.
“House Speaker Hawkins tells us the legislature does not intend on extending that offer,” KSNT reported. “’We put an end to it on December 31st,’” Hawkins told the outlet. “’Believe me, I was not kidding when I said that.’”
The Chiefs announced their decision Dec. 22 to move to an undisclosed location on the Kansas side by 2031 to a $3 billion domed stadium.
