Revenge of the Nerds star Robert Carradine died at 71 in February, and the actor’s cause of death was just officially confirmed.
On June 10, documents obtained by the Daily Mail from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner revealed that the actor died from the effects of an anoxic brain injury caused by a suicide attempt while being treated at UCLA’s Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital. His manner of death was ruled suicide.
“It is with profound sadness that we must share that our beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and brother Robert Carradine has passed away,” Carradine’s family shared in a statement to Deadline on February 23. “In a world that can feel so dark, Bobby was always a beacon of light to everyone around him.”
The message continued, “We are bereft at the loss of this beautiful soul and want to acknowledge Bobby’s valiant struggle against his nearly two-decade battle with bipolar disorder. We hope his journey can shine a light and encourage addressing the stigma that attaches to mental illness. At this time, we ask for the privacy to grieve this unfathomable loss. With gratitude for your understanding and compassion.”
In addition to starring as Lewis Skolnick in the 1984 comedy film Revenge of the Nerds, Carradine is known for playing the dad of Hilary Duff‘s titular character in Lizzie McGuire. He also appeared in the 1980 film The Big Red One, and 1996’s Escape from L.A. Carradine reprised his role as Lewis in the Revenge of the Nerds sequel films, Nerds in Paradise (1987), The Next Generation (1992), and Nerds in Love (1994).
