First Time Flyers are a dynamic UK country band formed by seasoned musicians Tim Prottey-Jones, Vicki Manser, Jake Morrell, and Poppy Fardell. Each artist brings a wealth of experience from notable stages such as Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry, the Ryman Auditorium, and London’s West End. Their collective journey began with a shared vision to blend heartfelt storytelling with captivating harmonies, leading to the formation of the band. Since their debut at the C2C Festival in 2023, they’ve quickly become a prominent force in the UK country scene, selling out their first headline tour, opening for Bruce Springsteen at BST Hyde Park and scoring a BBC Radio 2 playlist spot.

Debut album ‘Bound to Break’ marks a significant milestone in their musical journey. The album showcases their evolution as artists, blending elements of country, pop and rock with rich harmonies and timeless songwriting. Tracks like ‘Primadonna’ and ‘Jump’ exemplify their ability to craft infectious, radio-ready hits that resonate with a wide audience. As they embark on their most ambitious UK headline tour later this month, First Time Flyers are poised to solidify their place as one of the most exciting acts in UK country music.

‘Bound to Break’ explodes with infectious energy with ‘Jump,’ a track that immediately sets the tone with its huge percussive rhythm, western vibes and finger snaps. Poppy and Vicki’s vocals drive the song with lines like, “I’m stubborn because I just won’t walk away,” while the duo’s dynamic delivery captures the thrill and risk of throwing everything into a relationship: “If love’s a drug then sign me up.” It’s a perfect introduction to the band’s signature blend of pop-leaning country with big hooks and an energy that feels built for live performance.

The momentum continues with ‘Primadonna,’ a playful yet pointed take on male toxic behaviour. Poppy and Vicki once again take the lead, their vocals supported by Jake and Tim’s deft instrumentation and harmonies. “You can say what you wanna but, primadonna, don’t waste my time” captures the frustration of being stood up by an unnamed celebrity, while the gang-vocal ‘woh ohs’ and a killer guitar solo make it an irresistible, radio-ready country-pop banger. The track exemplifies how First Time Flyers merge storytelling with anthemic choruses that stick.

Mood begins to shift with ‘Happier,’ where the album channels classic Fleetwood Mac and Lady A vibes. Jake opens the first verse, gradually building into a moody, reflective chorus with the question, “All I never wanted to see was you happy, are you happier?” The track is a masterclass in post-breakup introspection, exploring themes of regret and lingering feelings. Guitar-driven and drenched in Laurel Canyon sunset vibes, it’s a song that balances heartache with musical sophistication.

‘Looking Back Now’ and ‘Almost’ continue this reflective arc. The former is a piano-driven ballad that grows into a sweeping arrangement, with the lyric “Being driven somehow drove us into the ground” capturing the bittersweet tension of chasing dreams at the cost of love. ‘Almost,’ meanwhile, evolves into a big, plaintive ballad helmed by Poppy and Vicki, with Jake contributing poignant second-verse vocals. Both tracks showcase First Time Flyers’ gift for combining wistful storytelling with deft pop-country instrumentation.

The energy returns on tracks like ‘Walk the Line,’ ‘Trouble,’ ‘Already Out’ and ‘Out of Your Mind,’ where western-themed rhythms, galloping drumbeats, and banjo-driven melodies bring a sense of movement and fun. ‘Walk the Line’ cleverly juxtaposes dance moves with relationship risks: “two stepping” becomes a metaphor for stepping into love which also includes a nod to Johnny Cash and his classic Folsom Prison blues to continue the ‘Walk the Line’ theme. ‘Out of Your Mind’ keeps the live energy high, complete with handclaps, swapping vocal leads and the driving question, “Will you ever be mine?” These songs highlight the band’s infectious charisma and live-show potential. An album stand out must be ‘Already Out.’ Here First Time Flyers channel a big Shaboozey vibe with mentions of shots, whiskey and a big night out. The gang vocals bring a party feel and the galloping western pop makes you shout ‘Hell Yeah’ when the band urge, “Don’t think about tomorrow, drink it from the bottle.”

The album’s softer, reflective side shines through in ‘Before the Wind Changes,’ ‘Do You Remember?’ and ‘First Dance,’ where themes of heartbreak, empowerment, and tender moments take center stage. Harmonies and layered vocals shine, whether in contemplative musings like “What if I stay like this forever” or in a delicate a cappella moment capturing the intimacy of a first dance at a wedding. These tracks offer a balance to the uptempo numbers, showing the band’s versatility and emotional depth. ‘Do You Remember,’ in particular, is a highlight. The band pivot here into atmospheric 80s infused Pop with a bluesy undertone. Slick harmonies, male / female vocals swapping back and forth and some cracking blues guitar licks all contribute to another song dripping in emotion and post-relationship angst that hits home right where its intended to.

Bound to Break closes with ‘Over the Moon,’ a rock-leaning, electric guitar-driven finale that leaves no doubt about the band’s ambition. From fiery uptempo tracks to tender ballads, First Time Flyers demonstrate they’ve come together like one giant country music Power Ranger, ready to dominate the UK scene. The album title itself becomes a promise unfulfilled—each track pushes boundaries, yet the melodies, harmonies and energy ensure these songs land without breaking as four separate individuals and personalities deliver the goods in one unified supergroup! ‘Bound to Break’ isn’t just a debut album; it’s a statement, it’s a middle finger up to all the doubters and it’s a clarion call to the UK music scene that we can do Country/Western/Pop/Rock as good as anyone else – that’s a clarion call that is impossible to ignore!
