Rhythms unite at Mumbai Drum Day

Mumbai Drum Day’s ‘A Tapestry of Taal’ celebrated percussion’s universal language, weaving global and Indian rhythms. The concert featured diverse artists like Abbos Kosimov, Bettina Castano, Ojas Adhiya, and Sridhar Parthasarathy, culminating in a grand jugalbandi led by Gino Banks. The event highlighted rhythm’s power to connect cultures and generations.

Friday night saw Mumbaikars with rhythm in their veins flock to Bandra for the electrifying Mumbai Drum Day concert, aptly titled ‘A Tapestry of Taal’. Curated by drummer Gino Banks, the festival celebrated the boundless language of percussion, weaving together global traditions and contemporary drum set artistry into one powerful musical showcase. The evening unfolded as a vibrant dialogue between cultures and styles. From the hypnotic beats of Dorya master Abbos Kosimov to the fiery passion of Flamenco exponent Bettina Castano, the concert travelled continents without ever losing its pulse. American drummer Cain Daniel delivered a high-energy drum set performance, while Indian percussion stalwarts Ojas Adhiya on tabla and Sridhar Parthasarathy on mridangam showcased the depth and intricacy of classical rhythms.

Dance met rhythm in a spellbinding segment by Kathak artist Aditi Bhagwat, whose footwork conversed seamlessly with the percussionists like Khwab Haria. The contemporary edge came alive with beatboxer Hardik Tyagi, blurring the lines between voice and instrument. The spotlight also shone on young talent, with spirited performances by Siddhi Shah and 11-year-old drum prodigy Sanidhya Das, whose confidence and command over rhythm drew roaring applause. The evening culminated in a grand jugalbandi led by Gino Banks himself, bringing all the artistes together in a breathtaking rhythmic crescendo that had the audience on its feet. Holding the show together with infectious energy was compere Eden Kesang, whose witty, warm and heartfelt introductions added a layer of intimacy to the grand musical spectacle. The audience was as illustrious as the stage. Spotted soaking in the beats were legendary jazz pianist Louis Banks, composer-drummer Ranjit Barot, percussion maestro Taufiq Qureshi, singer-composer Loy Mendonsa, and Joe and Shefali Alvares among many others, reflecting the respect and admiration the festival commands within the music fraternity. Gion said, “The artists’ exceptional performances and rhythmic diversity embodied our theme, ‘A Tapestry of Taal’. The support from the artists and the legends of music and rhythum in our country is humbling. The audience’s constant support helps make our show a success year after year.” More than just a concert, A Tapestry of Taal was a celebration of rhythm as a universal language, one that transcended genres, generations and geographies, reminding Mumbai once again why it marches to the beat of its own drum.
