Ridley Scott believes one of his most acclaimed sci-fi movies is actually a comedy. While the film does have a few lighthearted moments, it was never categorized as a comedy. However, Scott has now revealed that the concept is indeed a comedy.

The Martian is hailed as one of the best sci-fi movies of the generation, but Ridley Scott, the movie’s director, shares a different perspective.
“A guy gets stranded on Mars, and he actually survives, and they pick him up, and he goes back to Earth,” Scott told GQ, summarizing the plot of the movie.
“Isn’t that f—— boring, right? But I knew what to do,” the Alien director continued. “And I saw it in the early days. I said, ‘Wait a minute, this is a comedy.’ And they said, ‘What? A comedy?’ I said, ‘Yes, it’s a comedy. How on earth could anything where you survive by growing vegetables from your own sh– not be funny?” he added.
His statement comes during a conversation about his upcoming movie, The Dog Stars, starring Jacob Elordi and other A-listers. Scott compared the script for both movies, noting that while they may seem to be restricted to a specific genre on paper, he sees them “with a completely fresh view.”
This isn’t the first time that Ridley Scott’s movie was classified as a comedy. In 2016, The Martian was nominated for multiple Golden Globes in the “Comedy or Musical” categories. Interestingly, the film won the Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical, while Matt Damon took home the award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical during the show.
The Martian is based on Andy Weir’s 2011 novel of the same name. The movie featured Matt Damon as Mark Watney, an astronaut struck by debris during the Ares III mission on Mars. Following the incident, this team leaves him behind, believing he was dead. Alone on the planet, Mark uses his skills to survive and find a way to get in contact with NASA.
