Robert Devereux, the 2nd Earl of Essex, was a famous and dramatic figure in the court of Queen Elizabeth I of England.
Born in 1565, he was a handsome, charismatic, and ambitious young nobleman who became a great favourite of the much older Queen. For many years, Elizabeth showered him with titles and responsibilities, even though their relationship was often turbulent and full of arguments because of his rashness and pride. He was known as a military man, gaining fame for his part in the capture of Cádiz from the Spanish in 1596.
Essex was always eager for military glory and political power. His downfall began in 1599 when the Queen sent him to Ireland to suppress a major rebellion. His campaign there was a disaster; he made a truce with the rebel leader without Elizabeth’s permission and then suddenly abandoned his army to rush back to England.
He burst into the Queen’s private chambers to try and explain himself, but she was furious and ordered his arrest. She stripped him of his offices and income. Desperate and ruined, Essex attempted a coup (a sudden, illegal takeover) in 1601, leading a small number of followers into London to force the Queen to accept his demands. This rebellion quickly failed, and he was captured, tried for treason, and executed at the Tower of London in February 1601.
His dramatic life and tragic end made him a memorable figure in Elizabethan history.
