Paul McCartney reportedly declined an invitation to be roasted on Netflix.
According to Variety, the 83-year-old Beatle rejected the offer after NFL legend Tom Brady became the subject of the streamer’s first-ever live roast, The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady, in 2024. Kevin Hart ultimately took the hot seat this year, with his live roast special streaming on Netflix on Sunday, May 10. The rock icon’s roast rejection was confirmed by the show’s executive producer.
‘Roastmaster General’ and executive producer of the Netflix roast series, Jeff Ross, revealed to Variety, “We did ask Paul McCartney at one point.”
The 60-year-old comedian added, “To me, that would be a fantasy roast. Paul McCartney doesn’t need anything, but a Paul McCartney roast would be good for the world. It would be so funny to me because he is so loved,” reports the Irish Star.
Robbie Praw, chief of stand-up comedy at Netflix, also told the publication that the streamer had “thrown around a lot of names” for the next roastee, including Oscar winner Will Smith.
The roast franchise launched in 2024, drawing inspiration from the iconic Comedy Central program, with Tom Brady, which was hosted by Kevin and received an Emmy nomination for the live variety special. Netflix hopes to continue the tradition with more high-profile celebrities in the hot seat.
“There are a lot of B-list celebrities who want to get roasted. I want it to be like the Super Bowl of roasting,” Jeff told Variety. “Tom Brady, I held onto for three years. He retired, unretired, got divorced, then we decided to do it at the Netflix festival. To get a whale sometimes takes a while. We have another festival coming up in May, and I’m pretty confident we’ll have a roast in the spring.”
On Monday, May 12, Jeff discussed potential candidates for the next roast with the publication.
“A pop star or a rock star would be great. A rapper would be great,” the professional roaster said. “I could see Drake getting roasted and being a great one. One of my all-time favorite ideas is Stevie Wonder. I always say, ‘The Roast of Stevie Wonder: You’ve got to hear it to believe it.'”
The roast of Kevin Hart took place on May 10 at Los Angeles’ Kia Forum and was broadcast live on Netflix. The three-hour comedy event was hosted by Shane Gillis and featured Chelsea Handler, Pete Davidson, and Regina Hall, among others, who gleefully tore the 46-year-old comedian to pieces.
The Roast of Kevin Hart is now streaming on Netflix.
