Michael Stipe, frontman of the legendary alt-rock band R.E.M., finally clarified some of the lyrics to a song that’s baffled fans for decades.
Since the band didn’t print lyrics on the album sleeve, the words to the song have been up for debate for years ― so much so that it was once a joke on “The Simpsons.”
And that’s what caught Stipe’s eye on Bluesky as he shared a meme of Homer Simpson bragging: “I can sing all the lyrics to ‘It’s The End Of The World’ by R.E.M.”
“No you can’t, Mr. Simpson,” he’s told. “No one can.”
The stream-of-consciousness lyrics have been tough to decipher.
“Everybody thinks they know the words to this one, but after people blurt out ‘eye of the hurricane’ they tend to get lost until ‘breathing down your neck,’” Rolling Stone’s Andy Greene wrote in a 2011 ranking of the band’s 10 best songs. “It’s really a mouthful, but somehow it became a huge hit for R.E.M.”
But now, Stipe has clarified two of the song’s most debated lines:
