Meg Ryan was the quintessential rom-com star of the ‘80s and ‘90s with hits like Sleepless in Seattle, You’ve Got Mail and When Harry Met Sally. After largely stepping back from Hollywood for much of the past two decades, she made her return to the big screen in 2023 with What Happens Later, her first film in eight years. Now, nearly two years after that comeback, the actress was spotted during a rare public outing in May 2025.
Ryan, 63, was photographed on May 28, 2025, during a visit to the Prado Museum in Madrid, Spain. She kept her look casually chic, wearing a white Van Gogh graphic T-shirt tucked into high-waisted black trousers. With round sunglasses and her blonde hair worn loose in an effortless, tousled style, the French Kiss star was the picture of that same laid-back cool that’s defined her off-screen appearances for decades.
After a huge run in the ‘80s and ‘90s – with three Golden Globe nominations for Best Actress – Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical – her last major studio projects were in the early 2000s with Kate & Leopold in 2001 and Against the Ropes in 2004. By 2006, she was mostly absent from leading roles and has talked openly about wanting to step away from the industry.

“I took a giant break because I felt like there’s just so many other parts of my experience as a human being I wanted to develop,” Ryan said during an interview with Vanity Fair published on October 25, 2023. “It’s nice to think of it as a job and not a lifestyle. And that is a great way of navigating it for me.”
However, she returned to familiar territory with What Happens Later, her first romantic comedy in 15 years. This time around she wasn’t only in front of the camera, but behind it as well in the director’s chair and in the writing room as one of the cowriters, a project she discussed in an interview with Parade ahead of the film’s release.

“It came to me during lockdown,” she told the publication. “The essence of it is these two people who are stuck together. I just love that idea that we’re held in a space, even if it feels conflicted, maybe for reasons that heal them.”
While Ryan just listed her Montecito, California, estate for sale this spring, she remains out of the spotlight except for rare outings like this one in Madrid.
