Few sitcoms are as beloved as The Nanny, particularly when it comes to fashion. Rivaled only by Sex and the City and Friends, the ’90s series followed Fran Drescher as Fran Fine, a cosmetics saleswoman-turned-nanny who stumbled into highest echelons of society when she accepted a job taking care of a wealthy Broadway producer’s children. The feel-good show has remained a pop culture staple in the decades that have followed its 1999 finale, partly due to the humor and partly thanks to its style.
Throughout the years, celebrities have taken cues from Drescher’s on-set wardrobe, stepping out in bold patterns, animal prints, and playful skirt suits that look like they could have been pulled straight from costume designer Brenda Cooper’s mood boards. From Dua Lipa to Gigi Hadid, today’s biggest icons have embraced the over-the-top ’90s maximalism synonymous with the series, and Sabrina Carpenter even went so far as to find a leopard-print set identical to one from the pilot.
Now, Rosalía has joined the club. Heading to dinner at Craig’s in West Hollywood, the artist dressed to theme with a sleeveless black minidress, designed with a drop-waist piano key skirt. The familiar style instantly took us back 30 years, when Drescher, as Fine, wore a similar statement piece to nanny a musical prodigy (see here). Hers, worn with long sleeves, was created as a shortened version of a gown seen on Moschino Cheap & Chic’s Autumn/Winter runway.
Rosalía paired hers with oversize sunglasses, platform pumps, and her halo-bleached hair. Sans bag, she carried her phone and cigarettes in her hand with an air of nonchalance.
