Rosie O’Donnell gave an update on her relationship with Madonna 34 years after they starred in A League of Their Own.
During an interview with People published in late July, the former talk show host, 64, opened up about where she stands with the “Like a Prayer” singer, 67.
“We text, and I go to her house, and we talk about the kids,” O’Donnell shared. “She ran a very tight ship. I had a very not tight ship. Her kids Lola and Rocco would come over for a playdate, and I’d give them an ice pop, and turn on the cartoons.”
Additionally, the Flintstones actress revealed a similarity that instantly bonded her and Madonna when they first met while filming A League of Their Own. O’Donnell played third baseman Doris Murphy, while Madonna played center fielder Mae Mordabito in the 1992 historical drama.
“I’d never met another woman whose mother died, and they’re named after the mother,” O’Donnell explained. “When you go to the grave site, you see your name on the tombstone.”
She continued, “When we met, it was the first thing I said: ‘My mom died when I was young, and I was named after her too.’ It’s like we became sisters at that moment.”

In 1973, O’Donnell’s mother, Roseann Teresa O’Donnell, died at 39, following a battle with breast cancer. The younger Rosie was a few days shy of turning 11 at the time. Meanwhile, Madonna’s mother, Madonna Louise Ciccone, died at 30 from breast cancer in 1963, when the singer was just 5.
A League of Their Own premiered in 1992. In addition to O’Donnell and Madonna, it starred Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Lori Petty, Megan Cavanagh, Tracy Reiner, Bitty Schram, Ann Cusack, Anne Ramsay, and more.
Following the film, Madonna and O’Donnell remained friends; the former went on to appear several times as a guest on the latter’s The Rosie O’Donnell Show.
