Donald Trump’s late night social media posts ‘may signal cognitive concerns’

A royal expert is urging President Donald Trump to leave King Charles alone during the upcoming state visit.

The 77-year-old monarch and Queen Camilla, 78, are set to make a state visit to the U.S. between April 27 and April 30, where they’ll be welcomed by Trump, 79, and First Lady, Melania Trump, 55. This marks Charles‘s first visit to the U.S. as a reigning monarch and the first state visit by a British Monarch since the late Queen Elizabeth was hosted by George Bush in May 2007.

This landmark trip, following an invitation from Trump, coincides with the 250th anniversary of American independence and includes stops in Washington, D.C., New York City, and Virginia. Trump last visited the U.K. in September 2025, marking the first time in U.K. history that a foreign leader was given the honor of a second state visit. However, he quickly made headlines for breaking numerous royal protocols during his visit.

Now, Action Network has analyzed the latest odds that Trump will once again break royal protocol, reporting that the likelihood is -1010, which implies a 91% chance.

Ahead of the visit, former royal butler Grant Harrold, who worked with King Charles between 2004 and 2011, is urging the president to refrain from touching the monarch, something he did during his last visit, and to work on his handshake.

Speaking exclusively to Action Network, Harrold said, “Every time Donald Trump meets the Royal Family, he manages to break protocol. It’s happened so many times now, I think we can almost guarantee there’ll be a breach of protocol again.

“Most likely it’ll be Trump doing the wrong handshake or putting his hands on the King, or even dare I say hugging a member of the family. So it’ll be interesting to see what happens this time.

“My advice to the Trumps would be to look, but don’t touch. As simple as that. Look, smile, be gracious, but please do not touch. Leave the King alone.”

Harrold noted that Trump and Melania don’t need to bow or curtsy as they are not British, but he added, “The President could do with working on his handshake, dignifying it a bit.”

The royal insider advised, “It should be two or three pumps with your hands to the side, not too strong, not overpowering, not too limp – and make sure there is eye contact.”

Harrold added that conversation is also “key for these kinds of meetings.” He continued, “Trump should avoid asking anything too personal, for example he shouldn’t ask about any royal drama.

“And it’s also vital that anything they do discuss is kept confidential and not repeated. There have been previous incidents where the President has shared details of his personal letters with the King, and this would not have gone down well at the Palace.”

King Charles and Queen Camilla have revealed the detailed schedule for their four-day state visit, and it includes a series of historic and celebratory engagements.

They will visit Washington D.C., New York, and Virginia. His Majesty will then conduct a solo tour of Bermuda until May 2 – his first visit as Sovereign to a British Overseas Territory.

The monarchs will arrive in Washington, where Trump and the First Lady will welcome them with a private tea, followed by a diplomatic garden party.

A more formal ceremony will include a military review and a bilateral meeting between the King and Trump. His Majesty will also deliver an address to Congress, the first time a British monarch has addressed a joint session of Congress since Queen Elizabeth II spoke at the Capitol in 1991.

That evening, the King and the Queen will be the guests of honor at a state dinner held in the White House. The event will likely take place in the state dining room, and up to 140 guests could gather for the occasion.

After leaving Washington, the royals will travel to New York City, where they will focus on celebrating community ties and the U.S. and Britain’s modern relationship.

The King will visit a grassroots organization that uses sustainable urban farming to feed children affected by food insecurity. He will also speak with several financial leaders to discuss the economic benefits of the Special Relationship.

One of the most important events during their New York visit is a ceremony to mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11. Charles and Camilla will meet with the families of victims and first responders.

After a reception celebrating the King’s Trust’s work across America, Their Majesties will travel to Virginia, where they will meet with local residents and community organizers, watch performances by Appalachian cultural groups, and attend a “block party” to celebrate the U.S.’s 250th birthday.

Buckingham Palace describes the visit as an opportunity to “recognize the shared history of our two nations.”
