WASHINGTON (TNND) — King Charles III and Queen Camilla are set to arrive in Washington on Monday afternoon despite safety concerns following the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
“Following discussions on both sides of the Atlantic through the day, and acting on advice of Government, we can confirm the State Visit by Their Majesties will proceed as planned,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
It is the royal couple’s first official state visit to the U.S., marking the 250th anniversary of American independence. They also plan to travel to Virginia and New York during their trip.
President Donald Trump said the king will be “very safe” at the White House following concerns over the shooting.
“The White House grounds are really safe… He’s a great guy. They called, and they are so looking forward to being here. We spoke this morning,” Trump said on CBS News’ “60 Minutes.”
The visit will take place from April 27 to April 28, although the king’s trip to the United States will extend through April 30.
Activities on Monday include tea in the Green Room, followed by a tour of the White House beehive.
On Tuesday, a military arrival ceremony — a standing tradition since the 18th century — will take place on the South Lawn, followed by the inspection of the troops and a troop review.
A bilateral meeting between Trump and the king will follow, while the first lady and Queen Camilla meet with American students for a cross-cultural education event at the White House Tennis Pavilion.
On Tuesday evening, the two couples will attend a state dinner in the East Room.
Final farewells will take place Thursday morning in the Diplomatic Reception Room.
The visit follows Trump’s state visit to the U.K. in September, where he received a full royal welcome and called the king a “longtime friend.”
