Royals announce contract extension for All-Star Maikel Garcia

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – The Kansas City Royals have solidified the left side of their infield for years to come.

Kansas City announced Tuesday afternoon that the club has signed third baseman Maikel Garcia on a five-year contract extension with a club option for a sixth year.

Garcia, who will turn 26 ahead of the 2026 season, became a first-time All-Star with a breakout season last year. The Venezuela native had career-bests in batting average (.286) and on-base percentage (.351), along with 170 hits, which ranked 13th in Major League Baseball.

His outstanding play defensively helped Garcia win a Gold Glove at third base during his third full season with the Royals.

His contract extension will take him into his early thirties with Kansas City, which signed him as an international free agent in July of 2016.

It also ties the Royals contractually to Garcia and superstar shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. through at least the 2030 season.

MLB.com’s Anne Rogers reports Garcia’s extension is worth $57.5 million guaranteed. With the club option included and escalators for performance, the deal could reach $85 million, Rogers said.
