The Royals announced that Mark Canha has returned from rehab assignment and has been designated for assignment.
The 36-year-old right-handed hitter was originally acquired near the end of spring training from the Brewers for minor league pitcher Cesar Espinal. He hit just .212/.272/.265 with one home run in 125 plate appearances, and has been out since July 7 with an elbow injury. He hit a grand slam with the Double-A Naturals and went 4-for-17 with Omaha with a home run last week in Triple-A. But with the Royals acquiring veterans Adam Frazier, Randall Grichuk, and Mike Yastrzemski, and the emergence of John Rave, Canha no longer had a roster spot.
Canha had a $1.4 million salary this year that the Royals will be obligated to pay unless he is claimed off waivers. He was not on the active roster, so no corresponding roster move is required. The move does open up a spot on the 40-man roster.
