The Royals managed just four hits in a 4-3 loss in the bottom of the ninth on a walk-off double by Shea Langeliers in Sacramento on Friday evening.
Former Royals minor leaguer Mason Barnett got the start for the Athletics, and he kept the bats of his former organization in check for the first few innings. But in the fourth, Maikel Garcia and Carter Jensen singled, setting up a three-run home run by Jonathan India. It was his ninth home run of the year, and it gave the Royals a 3-0 lead.
Noah Cameron worked around some trouble the first two frames, but didn’t allow a run until the fifth. He gave up a one-out single to Shea Langeliers, then after retiring Nick Kurtz on a lineout, walked Brent Rooker and Tyler Soderstrom to load the bases. That would end his night at 4.2 innings, just the fourth time in 24 starts this year he failed to go five innings. Taylor Clarke gave up a bases-clearing double to Jacob Wilson to tie the game. Cameron allowed three runs on four hits with four walks and six strikeouts. He ends his rookie season with a 2.99 ERA, the third-lowest by a Royals rookie starter who made at least 20 starts behind only Paul Splittorff in 1971 and Kevin Appier in 1990.
Jonathan Bowlan and Angel Zerpa each provided a scoreless inning of relief. Matt Quatraro pulled Zerpa after he struck out Lawrence Butler to begin the bottom of the ninth. Rookie Luinder Avila gave up a single to Darell Hernáiz, but was able to get an out on a groundball force out at second. But Langeliers drilled a ball over the head of Adam Frazier in left for a game-winning walk-off double.
The Royals fall to 80-80 and will have to win the two remaining games of the season to enjoy a winning season. They will take on the Athletics again tomorrow evening at 9:05 CT with Michael Wacha on the mound to face Luis Morales.
