The Kansas City Royals drafted Louisville outfielder Zion Rose with their first pick in the 2026 MLB Draft; Kiley McDaniel of ESPN ranked him as Kansas City’s seventh-best prospect in its farm system. Pitchers Taylor Rabe and Jack Slightom, who were also early picks in Kansas City’s draft class, instantly entered ESPN’s top 10 prospects in the Royals organization.
However, in Bleacher Report’s post-MLB Draft farm system rankings, analyst Joel Reuter ranked the Royals’ farm system 25th in Major League Baseball. Coupled with their MLB-worst 38-59 record, fans are lobbying even more than they had earlier in the season for people to be fired.
Kansas City’s top prospect is Kendry Chourio, a right-handed pitcher the Royals signed out of Venezuela in January 2025. At 18 and on the verge of turning 19, Chourio is a long way from making his big league debut, with his ETA set for 2029, according to MLB.com. In fact, the Royals have just one player among their top five prospects expected to join the big league club before the 2029 season: catcher Blake Mitchell. Mitchell, who is currently 21 years old, could debut as early as next season, with the aging Salvador Perez currently manning the fort.

So, the context is that many of the Royals’ best young players in their farm system are just that: young. The front office appeared to make a pointed effort in this past draft to acquire more seasoned players who could help the big league team sooner, as two of its first three picks were college players in Rose and Ole Miss pitcher Taylor Rabe. Going into the draft, one player in Kansas City’s top 10 was older than 21, and he was also the only player drafted out of college. The other nine slots were filled with a mix of high school selections and international signings.
The Royals do have the young talent of Bobby Witt Jr. and Jac Caglianone on their big-league roster, but unfortunately, outside of that, they do not have many valuable trade chips to offer. Michael Wacha and Seth Lugo are the two biggest trade candidates, but the front office has already said it is not too interested in moving either of them. That could very well be a ploy to drive up the price for either starting pitcher.
Look for the Royals to bolster their farm system at the upcoming MLB trade deadline.
