Kansas City Royals pitcher Seth Lugo was involved in an extremely scary moment in the fourth inning of Wednesday’s game against the Texas Rangers. Lugo was forced to leave the contest early after taking a 107-mph line drive off his forehead.
The incident occurred with Lugo’s former teammate Brandon Nimmo at the plate. Nimmo immediately went to check on his friend after reaching first base and calling for time.
Lugo seemed to be doing much better than expected after getting hit. He appeared lucid and animated after the play, interacting with and talking to Nimmo. Lugo even cracked a slight smile while addressing his former teammate. He managed all of that despite a massive welt forming on his head. You could already see a colorful bruise sprouting on Lugo’s head just seconds after he was hit.

Although Lugo seemed OK, he was immediately removed from the contest. He gave up a run on three hits over 3 1/3 innings pitched.
While the Royals eventually took a lead, the team couldn’t hold it, falling to the Rangers 6-4 in extras.
After the contest, the Royals said Lugo was “doing well.” The team will put him through “the appropriate protocol and testing” to make sure he doesn’t have a concussion. It’s unclear whether Lugo will be able to make his next start if he passes all those tests.
Lugo, 36, is in the midst of another solid season with the Royals. After being used mostly as a reliever his whole career, he joined the Royals as a starting pitcher and has been an excellent signing by the franchise, posting a 3.55 ERA in three seasons with the team.
