The Kansas City Royals already have an All-Star shortstop in Bobby Witt Jr.
But a large chunk of high school baseball draft prospects play shortstop and transition to another position in the minors.
That’s the decision the Royals will have to make if they decide to move forward with Joel Reuters’ Major League Draft prediction for Bleacher Report. Witt is just 25 and is signed through 2034, so he’s not going anywhere anytime soon.
Nonetheless, Reuters predicts the Royals will draft the younger brother of the New York Yankees No. 1-ranked prospect, George Lombard Jr. Kansas City has the sixth overall pick in this year’s draft.
“[Jacob] Lombard raised some red flags with a considerable amount of swing-and-miss on the showcase circuit last summer, but he is putting together a strong senior season and erasing some of those concerns in the process,” Reuter wrote about the shortstop from Gulliver Prep in Miami, Fla. “Players with 60-power, 65-speed offensive profiles don’t grow on trees, and that’s especially true of ones capable of sticking at shortstop long-term.”

Jacob and George’s father, George Lombard Sr., played parts of six seasons in the Majors as an outfielder from 1998-2006. He is now the bench coach for the Detroit Tigers.
At just 18, it will take the youngest Lombard several years to develop in the minors. If he’s as good on both sides of the ball as his older brother, the Royals are in luck.
