The Kansas City Royals were close to making the playoffs this season, but ended up falling short. Now, with the offseason officially underway, it’s time to make some upgrades so they can make next year’s playoffs.

MLB Trade Rumors’ Steve Adams believes that they could find an upgrade through trading for St. Louis Cardinals utility All-Star and Gold Glove Brendan Donovan.

“Donovan, 29 in January, has emerged as one of the top multi-position players in the game. He’s a capable to above-average defender at second base, third base, and in the outfield corners, and he’s made brief appearances at shortstop and first base as well…The Royals have holes at second base and in at least one outfield corner,” Adams wrote.
This past season, which earned Donovan his first All-Star nod, he hit .287/.353/.422/.775 with 32 doubles, 10 home runs, and 52 RBI in 118 games played. He also has a Gold Glove, as mentioned before, which speaks to his talents as a defender.

With second base being the forefront of what Adams thinks the Royals need to upgrade, that means Donovan would be going against former Rookie of the Year Jonathan India. However, Donovan does have better stats than India, who only hit .233/.323/.346/.669 with 29 doubles, nine home runs, and 45 RBI in 136 games.
Hopefully, the Royals see the value in trading for Donovan and start negotiations right away. Otherwise, some other team that sees his value will try to snatch him up right away.
