The Kansas City Royals made a move late into Spring Training, adding veteran slugger Starling Marte on a one-year deal.
Monday, the terms of his contract were revealed. According to Anne Rogers, Marte’s contract is a major league deal with a $1 million guarantee.
The contract includes an additional $2 million in bonuses. Half of the bonuses are roster bonuses while the other half are incentive based.
A former two-time All-Star, Marte will be heading to his sixth different team for his 15th major league season.
Originally known for his defense and speed, Marte has remained relevant in the big leagues due to his bat. At his best, Marte is a contact hitter with a career .285 batting average in over 6,300 plate appearances.
Last season marked Marte’s first season as predominantly a designated hitter, making just 12 outfield appearances in 98 games played.
That said, in his prime, Marte was a great defender, winning two Gold Glove awards as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Now as a Royal, it remains to be seen whether or not Kansas City will play the 37-year-old in the field more often during the 2026 campaign.
Either way, given his proven track record and ability to put together quality at-bats, Marte makes for a solid pickup as a cost-effective veteran.
At the very least, Kansas City will likely use him as a pinch-hitter and occasional designated hitter.
He also may be able to help mentor Jac Caglianone, the recent No. 6 overall pick in the 2024 MLB draft.
