KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas City Royals General Manager JJ Picollo assured that team members are safe in Venezuela following the United States recent raid of Caracas over the weekend.
Multiple members of the Royals organization are participating in winter baseball in Venezuela, including franchise cornerstones Salvador Perez and Maikel Garcia and infield coach José Alguacil.

Picollo has been in contact with all three and and they, along with their families, are safe and unharmed.
“That was alarming in the sense that we knew we had a lot of players that were currently in Venezuela. Obviously the reports were there were no casualties so you felt good about that, but just the overall safety,” Picollo said.
“Jose Alguacil is in Venezuela right now. He managed in winter ball, and he’s been in contact with players. Myself and others have also, via text, some phone calls, we’ve confirmed everybody is fine.”

The United States raided Venezuela on the morning of Jan. 3 using drone strikes before capturing Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores. The couple was brought to the U.S. and indicted on drug charges.
Following the raid, the Venezuelan Professional Baseball League suspended its playoffs. They are set to resume play on Wednesday.
The Royals have several Minor League players in Venezuela. The team is checking on their status.
