The Kansas City Royals signed veteran outfielder Starling Marte to a major league contract on Saturday, according to multiple insiders.

Marte, 37, will be entering his 15th season. He spent the previous four with the New York Mets, coming off three straight seasons where he failed to reach the 100 games played mark. However, the longtime veteran finished last season with a solid .270 batting average with nine home runs and 34 RBI.
Marte is a two-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove Award winner. After making his debut in 2012, Marte went on to be a great player for the Pittsburgh Pirates over the next seven seasons.
He hit a great .287 BA with a solid .793 OPS, putting up 108 home runs and 420 RBI, winning his two Gold Gloves in 2015 and 2016. During his time in Pittsburgh, he never finished a season hitting below .275, with his career-high coming in 2016 when he hit .311, earning his first All-Star selection.
After his time in Pittsburgh, Marte spent 2020 with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Miami Marlins, playing in every game due to the shortened season due to COVID-19.
In 2021, Miami traded Marte to the Athletics and finished the season with a .310 batting average through 120 games – sixth-best in all of baseball – before signing with the Mets the following season.
Marte is one of the oldest players in baseball and will look to help a Royals team who missed the playoffs last season after finishing 82-80. Their Opening Day is scheduled for March 27th against the Atlanta Braves.
