Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. exited Monday’s game against the San Francisco Giants in the fifth inning.
Witt, 26, made the start after missing Sunday’s action with back tightness. He had two plate appearances before departing from the game.
The Royals inserted Nick Loftin at shortstop and in Witt’s spot in the order.
This season, Witt has dealt with a few nagging injuries. In June, Witt missed six games with a Grade 1 MCL sprain in his right knee. And he was hampered with his lower back earlier this season.
The Royals are currently without a long list of players. The injury list includes starters Cole Ragans (UCL surgery), Kris Bubic (left-shoulder soreness), Kyle Isbel (left plantar fasciitis), Maikel Garcia (left hand muscle strain) and Stephen Kolek (right flexor strain).
Witt entered Monday’s game hitting .280 with 13 homers, 39 RBIs, 30 stolen bases and an .801 OPS. He was named to his third All-Star team alongside teammate Michael Wacha earlier this month.
