The Kansas City Royals had to scratch Noah Cameron from his scheduled start on May 5 due to an injury to his lower back. The injury isn’t expected to be severe, according to Anne Rogers via X, formerly Twitter.
“Noah Cameron said the back tightness began after his last start. Said he’d be capable of pitching through it (like if it was later in the year) but Royals want to be cautious. Manager Matt Quatraro said they don’t anticipate it being anything more than one skipped start,” Rogers reported.
Cameron had a breakout rookie season in 2025, but he has failed to replicate it this year. In six starts for Kansas City, Cameron has a 5.40 ERA and a 1.61 WHIP. It’s a far cry from his 2025 season, when he started 24 games and posted a 2.99 ERA with a 1.10 WHIP.
The Royals have won four games in a row to get their season back on track, but are still three games under .500 with a 16-19 record. They are 8-2 over their last 10 games, and are just 1.5 games back of the Cleveland Guardians, whom they play on Tuesday. Kansas City won the first of a four-game set against Cleveland on Monday night.
The American League Central has seen better years, with the Guardians and the Detroit Tigers tied for first with 18-18 records. The Royals are still well within reach of making a push for the playoffs, and getting Cameron back to his 2025 form could help. Skipping a start and getting a chance to get his body right and recharged may not be the worst thing for him.
