Foster Griffin has been the best pitcher on this Nationals staff all year, and right now there’s no one I’d rather have on the mound in a game that matters. The left-hander is 7-2 with a 3.46 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, and 74 strikeouts across 14 appearances. Over his last four starts, he’s allowed just five total earned runs. His team has gone 10-4 when he takes the mound this season, and the Nationals are 9-5 ATS in his starts. He’s pitching with the kind of confidence and efficiency that turns good starters into aces, and he’s only getting better as the season goes on.

Michael Wacha is in freefall. The veteran right-hander has gone 0-3 with a 7.13 ERA across his last three starts, allowing four or more runs in each of them. His expected ERA sits at 4.25, well above his actual season mark of 3.58, which suggests the regression hasn’t fully caught up to him yet. His expected batting average against is in the 33rd percentile. He earned his first All-Star nod in 2024 after posting 20 home runs and 31 stolen bases, and the blend of power and speed makes him a constant threat at the plate. Two total bases is a low bar for a player with his production profile.

Wacha has posted a 7.13 ERA over his last three starts, and left-handed hitters have historically performed well against him when he’s leaving pitches over the plate.
