Kolek has been one of the most efficient starters in baseball this season. The 29-year-old right-hander is 3-0 with a 2.77 ERA and a 0.85 WHIP through 26 innings across four starts. He’s extended a quality-start streak that dates back to last season with the Royals, making him one of only four pitchers in franchise history to record five straight quality starts to begin his KC tenure. His most recent outing was a gem: 6.1 shutout innings against the Cardinals on 82 pitches, throwing 61 of them for strikes. He doesn’t overpower lineups, but he locates everything and refuses to give free passes.
MacKenzie Gore sits on the other side with a 3-4 record, 4.42 ERA, and 1.24 WHIP through 55 innings. He strikes out more guys than Kolek (62 K), but the walks have been a persistent issue with 26 free passes. The Rangers are 4-7 ATS when Gore starts and just 2-3 in his starts as the favorite. He has the kind of stuff that can dominate for stretches, but his command wavers, and when it does, the walks compound into runs. Against a Royals lineup that has Bobby Witt Jr. (.290/.354/.484) and Salvador Perez (9 HR, 25 RBI) in the middle, falling behind in counts is dangerous.
Neither team is playing well. The Royals are 22-34, 7-17 on the road, and just got swept by the Yankees. Texas is 25-31 and has dropped four of its last five, including a tight series loss to Houston. But in a matchup between two struggling clubs, I’ll take the better pitcher at plus money every time. Kolek has won all three of his starts as the underdog this year, and the Royals are 3-1 ATS when he takes the mound. The Rangers are also 10-23 when they allow a home run, and they’re still missing Corey Seager and Wyatt Langford from the lineup. This price doesn’t reflect the pitching gap.

Kolek’s last start tells you everything about this prop. He threw 6.1 shutout innings of four-hit ball against the Cardinals, one of his best outings of the season, and finished with just three strikeouts. That’s what he does. He’s a groundball pitcher who lives on contact, not whiffs. His 14 strikeouts in 26 innings give him a 4.85 K/9 rate, and he’s averaging 3.5 strikeouts per start this year. The under has been the right side consistently.
The Rangers make this even more comfortable. Texas doesn’t strike out much, ranking among the lower strikeout-rate teams in the American League. When a contact-oriented pitcher meets a contact-oriented lineup, the ball goes in play and the strikeout column stays empty. Kolek’s changeup and sinker generate weak grounders, not swings and misses. Even in his best outing of the year, the strikeouts didn’t follow. Take the under.
