In an interview with USA Today, Ryan explained, “In the commercial break, Derek was jumping on the center of the wheel and having Bruno spin it, much like the top of a cake ornament,. We did say, ‘Please don’t do that. That would break it, and there’s only one of those wheels. If that breaks, we have a real problem.'”
Ryan added, “We had to sort of say, ‘’Stick to the ledge’.” He then explained that the DWTS contestants are “very physical, and that makes for fun.”
Despite his antics playing on set equipment, Derek did well coming out on top to win $63,350 for Feeding America. However despite the win, he couldn’t escape some jokes from Ryan as the TV presenter revealed he used their longstanding history to create some on screen banter. “Knowing someone, or being friends, is definitely helpful, you can kind of tease them more than somebody you don’t know,” he explained. Ryan previously dated Derek’s sister Julianne, 37, for three years from 2010 to 2013.
The TV episode was also an emotional moment for Derek, who is currently expecting his first child with wife Hayley Erbert, 31. While appearing on the show, as Derek was gifted a special present from co-host Vanna White, 68, in the form of a baby blanket.
She explained, “When you came to the show, we taped your version, which is airing this Friday, I said I was going to make you a baby blanket. So, here you go.”
The surprise gift brought out the emotional side of Derek as he shared, “I can’t wait to show this to my wife…And I can’t wait to swaddle…I’m going to get emotional. I can’t wait.”
