Known for his work in the dance and hip hop space, Hxdi Stross introduces a more restrained Afro-influenced sound on ‘Nakwela’. The track is characterised by a calm delivery layered over dense production, departing from the high-energy styles often associated with his earlier releases.
“I mainly focused on busy backgrounds, a full song that sounds empty. This imitates the noise in my life, the comments, the energy,” Hxdi Stross said. “But it was important for the delivery to sound calm through all the mess. The balance was kind of difficult to reach because as much as I wanted a relaxing song, I did not want it to be soft.”
‘Nakwela’ also represents a more personal lyrical approach for the artist. Hxdi Stross said the song draws directly from his own experiences, rather than focusing solely on mood or atmosphere. “I have never made a song about my life experiences before; it has always been vibes. I think this is the best footprint I can leave on this earth for my offspring to better understand my circumstances in case they experience similar situations.
“Words and rhythm don’t just come to me these days, so I create a flow, four bars and wait a bit, patiently and humbly praying to God to give me another flow to build up on. I kept it honest, no punchlines, just a letter, a formal email. I avoided words that inflict anger.”
The production of ‘Nakwela’ involved an extended technical process, with several engineers contributing to the final mix. “I had five different engineers work on the mix,” Hxdi Stross said. “My engineers would tell me that it’s hard to get what I want because it’s in my head. But we finally achieved my sound and I am very happy.”
Beyond music, Hxdi Stross works as a video producer, creating visual content for international brands. His experience in visual storytelling informs his musical output, with an emphasis on structure and intention.
Reflecting on the release, he described the track as a personal milestone. “It’s a relief for me to release it, I feel free, lighter. This is my duty to this earth, my honest and transparent contribution,” he said.
‘Nakwela’ has begun receiving early radio play, including on stations such as YFM, and is available on digital streaming platforms.
