Hollywood star Sam Neill’s final Instagram post revealed the TV legend was looking forward to attending Australia’s prestigious Logies award next month after receiving a nomination just weeks before his sudden death.
The beloved actor — known for his roles in Jurassic Park, The Piano and Peaky Blinders — died in Sydney on Monday at the age of 78, surrounded by his family.
The beloved New Zealand-born star had been nominated for a silver Logie award for his role in the critically acclaimed legal drama series, The Twelve, and hoped to attend the ceremony in Sydney on August 16.
In an post uploaded to his Instagram in June, the star shared he had been nominated for Best Actor in a Drama alongside Hunter Page-Lochard, Jacob Elordi and Stephen Peacocke who were also up for the award.
“Very happy to receive a SILVER LOGIE nomination today. (Australian TV Awards). The Twelve S3. Many thanks to so many… another day…. but for now a wonderful cast and crew,” he captioned the post.
In a career that spans over five decades, the celebrated TV and movie legend has previously been nominated for three Golden Globes and two Primetime Emmy awards.
His other accolades include winning the Silver Logie for Most Popular Actor in 2023 for the role of defence barrister Brett Colby in The Twelve, alongside his previous win for Most Outstanding Actor in 2005 for his role in Australian television miniseries, Jessica.
His family shared the news of his tragic passing on Monday.
“It is with immense sadness that the whānau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney Australia. Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life,” the post said.
“The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free. They would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their incredible care.
“More details will be shared later, but for now, on behalf of the family, we ask that you respect their privacy as they navigate this immeasurable loss.”
The actor announced on April 29 that he was cancer-free after undergoing a new treatment when chemotherapy stopped working on his stage-three blood cancer.
